About Sump Pump Repair Guys in Kenosha

We repair sump pumps and nothing else. No waterproofing upsell, no membership plan. You get a diagnosis, a written price, and a full-cycle test before we leave.

Kenosha recommends two fittings on a sump discharge that most basements here do not have. Both exist for the same reason: a discharge line that freezes or floods sends the water straight back at you.

Two fittings the city recommends

Whether the discharge runs above ground or below, the city highly recommends a backflow preventer, and an air gap or overflow valve giving the water a second way out.

pit 1. Backflow preventer stops water returning down the line 2. Air gap or overflow a second route out if the main line is blocked frozen or flooded Without either one, a blocked outlet means the water has nowhere to go but back into the basement.
Both are recommended whether the line runs above ground or below, because both failures happen in the same weather.
  • Ten feet

    Distance from the foundation

State code puts the discharge point ten feet from the foundation. Downspouts draining too close add to what the pump moves, so the same ten feet is advised.

  • The 1990s

    Sanitary connections were banned

Discharges to the sanitary sewer, by direct plumbing or through a floor drain, were prohibited to prevent backups and stop clean water being treated.

  • Still connected?

A plumber has to reroute it

If your sump still runs into the sanitary line, the city asks you to use a licensed plumber to disconnect and reroute it.

  • Winter

    Freezing is the common failure

A line that ices over is exactly what those two fittings are for, and it happens every year.

Four places the water may not end up

Kenosha regulates the discharge by what it does when it lands, not only how far out it goes. Water accumulating or icing in any of these is a nuisance.

Your house Neighbouring property The road Public sidewalk The parkway
New discharges through the curb are not permitted, and existing curb discharges may be ordered to redirect if they cause a nuisance in the right of way.
  • Icing is the enforcement trigger

Water crossing a footpath in a lakefront winter becomes ice within hours. That is what the ordinance is written around.

  • The curb route is closing

New curb discharges are not allowed, and an existing one stands only while it causes no problem in the right of way.

  • Neighbour disputes are avoidable

Discharge aimed onto an adjacent property is prohibited outright. Turning the outlet is cheaper than the conversation.

  • Much of the city drains to the Pike River

A large part of Kenosha sits in that watershed, so what leaves your property carries on into open water.

What we repair

  • 01

    Float switch

The most common failure. If it runs when you lift the float by hand, this is it.

  • 02

    Check valve

Failed valves drop the discharge column back into the pit seconds after shutoff.

  • 03

    Impeller and motor

Grinding, humming or tripping. We test under load before recommending replacement.

  • 04

    Backflow preventers

Fitting and servicing the one on the discharge line, which is a different device from a sewer backwater valve.

  • 05

    Air gaps and overflows

Adding the second route the city recommends, so a frozen outlet does not mean a flooded floor.

  • 06

    Frozen discharge lines

Thawed and cleared, then re-pitched and re-routed so the same freeze does not repeat.

Kenosha sump pump questions, answered

How far out does my discharge have to go?

State code puts it ten feet from the foundation, and the same is advised for downspouts. The city also requires that the water does not accumulate or ice on a sidewalk, parkway or road, or run directly onto a neighbouring property.

Can I run the discharge out through the curb?

Not for a new installation. New curb discharges are not permitted, and an existing one may be ordered to redirect if it creates or contributes to a nuisance in the right of way.

What is a backflow preventer on a sump line?

A device that stops water travelling back down the discharge pipe into your basement during a freeze or flood. The city recommends one whether the line runs above ground or below. It is not the same as a sewer backwater valve.

What is an air gap or overflow for?

A second way out. If the main line is frozen or submerged, the overflow lets the pump keep moving water instead of pushing against a blockage until the pit fills.

My sump drains into a floor drain. Is that allowed?

No. Discharges to the sanitary sewer by direct plumbing or through a floor drain were banned in the 1990s. A licensed plumber should disconnect and reroute it.

How fast can someone come out?

Same day across most of Kenosha County, and after hours when water is already coming in. Most parts-level repairs finish in the same visit.

Give the water a second way out before winter does.
