We repair sump pumps and nothing else. No waterproofing upsell, no membership plan. You get a diagnosis, a written price, and a full-cycle test before we leave.

Not every house needs a pump. Where the ground falls the right way, a foundation drain reaches the storm sewer by gravity. Oshkosh is flat and sits on a lake, so that route is rarer than people hope.

Gravity, or a pump

These are the two ways a foundation drain gets rid of water, and code treats them differently. The gravity route needs a trap with cleanouts and a vent of its own.

Foundation drain Gravity to the storm sewer trap, with cleanouts, and its own vent Into a pit, and pumped out to the yard or the storm sewer the site decides
Where the fall exists, gravity never loses power and never burns out a motor. Where it does not, a pump is the only option.
  • Trap

Gravity drains have to be trapped

A foundation drain discharging by gravity to a storm sewer must be trapped, and that trap needs cleanouts so it can be cleared.

  • Vent

And the trap has to be vented

A trap receiving clearwater must be vented. Without it the trap siphons dry and stops doing the job it was fitted for.

  • Flat

    Fall is what Oshkosh lacks

On level ground beside a lake there is often nowhere lower to send the water. That is why so many basements here are pumped.

  • Honest

We will tell you which you have

If your basement drains by gravity and the trap is blocked, you do not need a pump. You need the cleanouts using.

One vent that must never be shared

Code is explicit. Vent piping for a clearwater drain system may not be connected to a vent system serving a sanitary drain. Tying the two together is a shortcut that shows up years later as smell.

Roof Clearwater vent Sanitary vent not permitted
The same rule covers chemical waste vents. A clearwater system stays on its own from the trap all the way up.
  • A dry trap is an open pipe

If the vent is missing, the trap loses its seal and the storm sewer has a clear path into the basement.

  • Vents belong an inch above the floor

A vent serving a solid covered sump has to terminate at least an inch above the finished floor, so water crossing the slab cannot enter it.

  • Lake Winnebago sets the floor level

On the lake at the mouth of the Fox, the water table sits close to the surface and stays there through a wet spring.

  • Cleanouts are there to be used

If a gravity system has slowed, the cleanouts exist precisely so it can be rodded and cleared. That is a far smaller job than fitting a pit.

What we repair

  • 01

    Float switch

The most common failure. If it runs when you lift the float by hand, this is it.

  • 02

    Check valve

Failed valves drop the discharge column back into the pit seconds after shutoff.

  • 03

    Impeller and motor

Grinding, humming or tripping. We test under load before recommending replacement.

  • 04

    Pit and basin

Cracked, silted or undersized basins short-cycle every pump fitted into them.

  • 05

    Gravity drains and traps

Clearing a blocked trap through its cleanouts, and checking the vent that keeps the seal.

  • 06

    Frozen discharge lines

Thawed and cleared, then re-pitched so the same freeze does not repeat next winter.

Oshkosh sump pump questions, answered

Does every basement need a sump pump?

No. Where the ground falls enough, a foundation drain can reach the storm sewer by gravity, which never loses power and never burns out. On flat ground near the lake that fall often does not exist, and then a pump is the only route.

What does a gravity foundation drain need?

A trap, cleanouts on that trap, and a vent. Code requires a foundation drain discharging by gravity to a storm sewer to be trapped, and a trap receiving clearwater to be vented.

Can the clearwater vent join the sanitary vent?

No. Vent piping for a clearwater drain system may not be connected to a vent system serving a sanitary drain or a chemical waste system. It stays separate the whole way up.

My basement smells but nothing has backed up.

Often a dry trap. Without a working vent the seal siphons away, and once it is gone the pipe is simply open. Refilling it is a start, but the vent stops it recurring.

My gravity drain has slowed. Do I need a pump now?

Usually not. The cleanouts exist so the trap and line can be rodded and cleared. That is a much smaller job than cutting the floor for a pit, and worth trying first.

How fast can someone come out?

Same day across most of Winnebago County, and after hours when water is already coming in. Most parts-level repairs finish in the same visit.

Sometimes the answer is not a pump at all.

Emergency repair, diagnostics, pit and valve testing, or a dry-weather inspection. Serving Oshkosh and all of Winnebago County.
