My pump runs every few minutes. Is it broken?

Possibly not, and this is the most misdiagnosed thing in Dayton. The city sits on the Great Miami Buried Valley Aquifer, up to 200 feet of highly permeable sand and gravel holding roughly 1.5 trillion gallons. Water moves down through that material easily, so the water table is both high and quick to respond. Regular cycling can be the system working correctly.

Three things do indicate a fault: cycling within seconds rather than minutes, running with the pit visibly empty, or a clear increase over what the same pump did last year. Any of those is worth a call. Steady, spaced cycling with a full pit usually is not.

Why does Dayton advice differ from Columbus or Cleveland?

Because the ground is the opposite. Columbus sits on clay loam that does not drain, so water sheets off and arrives in surges during storms. Dayton sits on sand and gravel that drains freely into an aquifer close to the surface, so water arrives steadily and more or less constantly.

That changes the failure mode. Clay cities kill pumps with surge and freeze. Dayton kills them with running hours. It also changes discharge placement, because on permeable ground water released near the house percolates back down to your pit instead of running away.

How long should a sump pump last in Dayton?

Less than the seven to ten years you will read everywhere else, because that figure assumes long idle periods between storms. A pump on a high duty cycle accumulates the same running hours in noticeably less calendar time.

Start paying attention at five or six years here rather than seven. The switch usually goes first, since every cycle is a mechanical operation and a Dayton pump performs a great many more of them.

Do I need a bigger pump if mine cannot keep up?

Usually not. A pump that cannot keep up is often fighting a failed check valve, a partly blocked discharge line, or a basin too small for the inflow. None of those improve with more horsepower.
