Sump pump technician repairing a basement sump pit in Elgin, Illinois

About Sump Pump Repair Guys in Elgin

We repair sump pumps and nothing else. No waterproofing upsell, no membership plan. You get a diagnosis, a written price, and a full-cycle test before we leave.

Elgin’s ordinance contains one line that catches people out constantly, and the city runs a grant for drainage problems that begins with something you can photograph yourself.

One pump, one job

City code is blunt about it. A sump pump shall be used for one function only, either the discharge of stormwater or the discharge of sewage. Most Elgin basements should therefore have two pumps, not one.

Storm sump Groundwater, footing tiles window wells, areaway drains Storm sewer, or onto the ground never joined Sanitary ejector Basement floor drains, laundry, bathrooms Sanitary sewer
Two systems, two pumps, no crossover. Mixing them is what puts clean water into a pipe sized for sewage.
  • 01

    Groundwater goes to storm

A sump fitted to receive groundwater or stormwater must be connected to the storm sewer, or discharge onto the ground.

  • 02

    Sewage goes to sanitary

A pump handling floor drain flow or sanitary sewage connects to the sanitary sewer. That is the ejector, and it is a different machine.

  • 03

    Never the two together

Footing drains and drainage tile may not connect to the sanitary sewer, and neither may window well or areaway drains.

  • 04

    Who treats it

The city maintains over 740 miles of sanitary sewer and 320 miles of storm sewer, then sends the wastewater to the regional reclamation district for treatment.

The grant that starts with a photograph

Elgin funds drainage fixes on private property, and the strongest evidence is the simplest. Water still standing three days after the rain stopped.

Rain stops 24 hours 48 hours 72 hours Still standing? Photograph it. Documented standing water at least 72 hours after a rain event is what the city gives priority to.
Date the photos. Evidence gathered during the storm is worth far less than evidence gathered three days later.
  • Fifty percent, up to five thousand

With a contractor the city reimburses half of labour and materials up to 5,000 dollars. Doing the work yourself, it is half of materials only, up to 3,000.

  • Permits either way

Even a homeowner doing their own work still has to secure the necessary permits and approvals from the city first.

  • Sixty days to finish

Once the reimbursement agreement is signed there are 60 days to complete the work and submit all payment documentation.

  • Shared problems rank higher

Priority goes to long-standing issues causing code violations or property damage, and to projects that benefit more than one property. A shared problem is a stronger application.

What we repair

  • 01

    Float switch

The most common failure. If it runs when you lift the float by hand, this is it.

  • 02

    Check valve

Failed valves drop the discharge column back into the pit seconds after shutoff.

  • 03

    Impeller and motor

Grinding, humming or tripping. We test under load before recommending replacement.

  • 04

    Pit and basin

Cracked, silted or undersized basins short-cycle every pump fitted into them.

  • 05

    Discharge line

Blocked, crushed, frozen, or crossing a pavement where it becomes a nuisance in winter.

  • 06

    Ejector pumps

The second pump in the basement, serviced as its own machine rather than an afterthought.

Elgin sump pump questions, answered

Can one pump handle both groundwater and the basement bathroom?

No. City code states a sump pump shall be used for one function only, either stormwater or sewage. Groundwater goes to the storm sewer or onto the ground, sewage goes to the sanitary sewer, and the two systems stay separate.

Can my window well drain go into the sewer?

Not the sanitary sewer. Window well and areaway drains are specifically barred from it, as are footing drains and drainage tile. That water belongs on the storm side.

How do I qualify for the drainage grant?

Start by documenting standing water at least 72 hours after a rain event. Priority also goes to problems causing code violations or property damage, and to fixes that help more than one property.

What does the grant pay?

Half of labour and materials up to 5,000 dollars if a contractor does the work, or half of materials only up to 3,000 if you do it yourself. Permits are required either way, and the work must be finished within 60 days of signing.

My discharge crosses the pavement and freezes. Is that a problem?

It can become one. Frequent discharge running across public sidewalks, drives and streets is treated as a nuisance, and in winter it is also a hazard. Rerouting is usually straightforward.

How fast can someone come out?

Same day across most of Kane County, and after hours when water is already coming in. Most parts-level repairs finish in the same visit.

Two pumps, two jobs. We service both.

Emergency repair, diagnostics, pit and valve testing, or a dry-weather inspection. Serving Elgin and all of Kane County.
