About Sump Pump Repair Guys in Fort Wayne
We repair sump pumps and nothing else. No waterproofing upsell, no membership plan. You get a diagnosis, a written price, and a full-cycle test before we leave.
Fort Wayne publishes something on sewer backups that almost nobody says out loud. The cheap way of stopping water can cost you more than letting the basement flood.
Why blocking the water can be the expensive option
The city’s own guidance is blunt about it. Cheaper methods create greater pressure, and if that pressure breaks a sewer line or buckles the floor, the repair costs more than the flood would have.
- The trade
Cheap methods, greater pressure
The city puts it directly. The least expensive measures create the highest pressures, which is exactly why the effective ones cost more.
- The rule
It may not even be allowed
Local ordinances can prohibit stopping sewer build-up. Worth checking before anyone sells you a plug for a floor drain.
- The catch
Overhead needs power
An overhead sewer requires a pump running on continuous power, or a backup system for when the power goes. Storms take out both at once.
- Be realistic
Insurance will not drop
The city notes there is no reduction in regular programme insurance rates for doing this work. It protects the house, not the premium.
The tunnel helps, but not everywhere equally
The deep rock tunnel opened in November 2024 and keeps around 900 million gallons of combined sewage out of the rivers each year. It was aimed at particular neighbourhoods, so which side of the water you live on matters.
-
Fourteen neighbourhoods connect to it
The tunnel protects roughly 45,000 residents and 15,000 properties from basement backups and street flooding, concentrated in the older core of the city.
-
The target was four overflows a year
It came out of a 2008 consent agreement with the federal EPA requiring a 90 percent cut in overflows, down from an average of about 72 events a year.
-
Separation helps too
Neighbourhood sewer separation projects carry the same side benefit, reducing the likelihood of sewage backing up into basements on those streets.
-
None of it touches your pump
Public work changes what the street can carry. The pit, the switch, the valve and the discharge line are still yours to keep running.
What we repair
- 01
Float switch
The most common failure. If it runs when you lift the float by hand, this is it.
- 02
Check valve
Failed valves drop the discharge column back into the pit seconds after shutoff.
- 03
Impeller and motor
Grinding, humming or tripping. We test under load before recommending replacement.
- 04
Pit and basin
Cracked, silted or undersized basins short-cycle every pump fitted into them.
- 05
Frozen discharge lines
Thawed and cleared, then re-pitched so the same freeze does not repeat next winter.
- 06
Backup systems
Load testing the battery, because an overhead system without power is not a system.

Fort Wayne sump pump questions, answered
Can I just plug the floor drain during a backup?
It is a bad trade and it may not be permitted. The city warns that cheaper methods create greater pressure, and if that pressure breaks a sewer line or buckles the floor, the repair costs more than the flood would have. Local ordinances may prohibit it outright.
Is an overhead sewer the answer then?
It is the effective option, and the city is honest that effective costs more. It also needs a pump on continuous power, or a backup system for outages, and it will not reduce your insurance rates.
Does the new tunnel protect my street?
It depends where you are. The tunnel serves neighbourhoods mainly south of the Maumee and along the St. Marys. Areas north of the Maumee were addressed with new storm sewers and a relief sewer instead.
My pump runs but the pit stays full. Why?
It is turning without moving water. Usually a jammed impeller or a discharge line blocked, crushed or frozen. Occasionally a check valve stuck shut. A larger pump fixes none of those.
Do I need a bigger pump if mine cannot keep up?
Usually not. A failed check valve or a basin too small for the inflow both look like an undersized pump. Oversizing into a small pit causes short-cycling and destroys the switch.
How fast can someone come out?
Same day across most of Allen County, and after hours when water is already coming in. Most parts-level repairs finish in the same visit.
Move the water. Do not just hold it back.
Emergency repair, diagnostics, pit and valve testing, or a dry-weather inspection. Serving Fort Wayne and all of Allen County.
