Indianapolis just finished a two billion dollar tunnel to stop sewage reaching its rivers. The part nobody finished is the connection at your own house, and that one is cheap.

What is under your street now

The tunnel system came out of a 2006 federal consent decree, went fully operational in January 2026, and captures at least 95 percent of combined sewer overflows. The scale of it is hard to picture, so here it is.

Street level Sewers from the 1880s, some still in service 250 ft 28 miles of deep rock tunnel One mile holds about 10 million gallons. The system stores 250 million per storm.
Built through bedrock, funded by sewer rates, and it does nothing about clean water entering the sewer at your house.
  • The scale

    Five billion gallons a year

That is roughly what the tunnels now divert to treatment instead of letting it reach the White River and other local waterways.

  • The age

    Pipes from the 1880s

Rehabilitation ran alongside the tunnels because parts of the network are well over a century old, with some kept in service until they fail.

  • The limit

    It cannot fix your lateral

Deep storage helps the whole system in a storm. It does nothing for a cracked private line, a failed valve or a pump that stopped.

  • The gap

Clear water is still getting in

The utility says plainly that clear water connections exist throughout the system, and that many homeowners do not know they have one.

Four things to check at your own house

The regulator prohibits clear water discharges to the sanitary sewer, and the utility runs a programme to find and correct them. None of these four should reach that pipe.

Roof gutters rain straight off the roof Downspouts check where they actually end Sump pump discharge the one most often plumbed wrong Footing and area drains usually buried and forgotten None to the sanitary sewer
Improper connections overload the sanitary system, which causes both the overflows and the basement backups.
  • Most owners simply do not know

These connections were made decades ago and are invisible from inside the house. A pump plumbed into the sanitary line looks identical to one plumbed correctly.

  • A valve needs a plumber’s judgement

The utility advises that a licensed plumber should evaluate whether a backwater valve is appropriate, where it goes and which type. A permit and inspection may be required.

  • Valves need servicing too

Maintenance has to happen on a regular schedule to the manufacturer’s recommendations. An unmaintained valve is a false sense of security.

  • Clay and a flat city

Heavy clay drains slowly and the ground here is flat, so water that cannot soak away sits against the foundation and finds the footing drains instead.

What we repair

  • 01

    Float switch

The most common failure. If it runs when you lift the float by hand, this is it.

  • 02

    Check valve

Failed valves drop the discharge column back into the pit seconds after shutoff.

  • 03

    Impeller and motor

Grinding, humming or tripping. We test under load before recommending replacement.

  • 04

    Pit and basin

Cracked, silted or undersized basins short-cycle every pump fitted into them.

  • 05

    Discharge line

Blocked, crushed, frozen, or running to a pipe it should never have been joined to.

  • 06

    Backup systems

Battery load testing and changeover checks, because storms take the power out.

Indianapolis sump pump questions, answered

The tunnel is finished. Why did my basement still back up?

Deep storage helps the system in a storm, but it cannot help a cracked private lateral, a failed valve, a stopped pump, or clean water still entering the sanitary sewer at your own house. Those stay local problems.

How do I know if I have a clear water connection?

Most owners do not, which is the point of the utility’s programme. Check where your gutters, downspouts, sump discharge and any footing or area drains actually go. None of them should reach the sanitary sewer.

Should I fit a backwater valve?

Possibly, but it is a plumber’s call. A licensed plumber should evaluate your property and decide whether one is appropriate, where it goes and what type. A permit and inspection may be required.

Do backwater valves need maintenance?

Yes, on a regular schedule following the manufacturer’s recommendations. A valve nobody has opened in ten years is not protection, it is an assumption.

Do I need a bigger pump if mine cannot keep up?

Usually not. A failed check valve or a basin too small for the inflow both look like an undersized pump. Oversizing into a small pit causes short-cycling and destroys the switch.

How fast can someone come out?

Same day across most of Marion County, and after hours when water is already coming in. Most parts-level repairs finish in the same visit.

Two billion under the street. Check the pipe at your house.

Emergency repair, diagnostics, pit and valve testing, or a dry-weather inspection. Serving Indianapolis and all of Marion County.
