About Sump Pump Repair Guys in South Bend

We repair sump pumps and nothing else. No waterproofing upsell, no membership plan. You get a diagnosis, a written price, and a full-cycle test before we leave.

South Bend has one of the cleverest sewer systems in the country. It reads itself every few minutes and moves capacity toward the storm. Your basement has none of that.

A sewer that moves capacity to the rain

South Bend covers about 40 square miles, so a storm often sits over one part of it and not another. Sensors spot where the pipes are filling, and valves throttle other neighbourhoods back to free up the interceptor.

storm sits here Neighbourhood line filling Dry line, throttled back valve Interceptor, capacity given to whoever needs it
Over 150 sensors report flow, depth, velocity and valve position, and the readings come in every few minutes.
  • The result

Three quarters of the overflow gone

Phase one removed over 75 percent of annual combined sewer overflow volume, keeping more than 1,500 million gallons out of the St. Joseph River each year.

  • The saving

    Cheaper than concrete

Federal regulators endorsed the updated plan in 2021 because intelligence replaced infrastructure, cutting the required investment by around 60 percent.

  • Still coming

A storage tank and a bigger plant

Phase two began in 2021 at over 276 million dollars, adding treatment capacity and the city’s first combined sewage storage tank. It runs to 2038.

  • The limit

    No valve protects one house

The system balances the network. It cannot know your pit is filling, and it cannot throttle anything on your side of the wall.

Who is watching which side of the wall

Worth comparing honestly. The public network is monitored constantly. The equipment that actually keeps your basement dry is monitored by nobody.

The street 150+ sensors across the network readings every few minutes automated gates and valves staff paid to watch it Your basement one float switch one check valve one motor, often original last tested: usually never
The city solved its half with data. The other half still comes down to somebody pouring water into the pit and watching.
  • Dry weather overflows are gone

Those were eliminated by the smart system, which means a backup in dry weather now points firmly at your own lateral or your own equipment.

  • Separation happened in some areas

Certain neighbourhoods had their sewers uncombined during phase one, so whether storm and sanitary share a pipe on your street varies by address.

  • Lake effect winters test the outlet

Northern Indiana freezes hard. A shallow or badly pitched discharge line ices solid and the pit fills while the pump runs against it.

  • Test it yourself twice a year

Pour several gallons in slowly and watch a full cycle. Autumn before the freeze, and again in early spring when the ground thaws.

What we repair

  • 01

    Float switch

The most common failure. If it runs when you lift the float by hand, this is it.

  • 02

    Check valve

Failed valves drop the discharge column back into the pit seconds after shutoff.

  • 03

    Impeller and motor

Grinding, humming or tripping. We test under load before recommending replacement.

  • 04

    Pit and basin

Cracked, silted or undersized basins short-cycle every pump fitted into them.

  • 05

    Frozen discharge lines

Thawed and cleared, then re-pitched so the same freeze does not repeat next winter.

  • 06

    Alarms and backups

High water alarms and battery load testing, so the pit is not the only thing keeping score.

South Bend sump pump questions, answered

The city has a smart sewer. Why did my basement still flood?

Because it balances the network, not your house. Sensors and valves move interceptor capacity toward whichever neighbourhood the storm is over. Nothing in that system knows your pit is filling or can act on your side of the wall.

My drains backed up in dry weather. What does that mean?

That points at your own lateral or your equipment. Dry weather overflows on the public system were eliminated by the smart sewer programme, so a dry day backup is not a capacity problem.

Is my street still on a combined sewer?

It varies. Sewer separation was carried out in certain neighbourhoods during phase one, while others still share a pipe. It changes how likely a storm is to push back toward your floor drain.

My pump runs but the pit stays full. Why?

It is turning without moving water. Usually a jammed impeller or a discharge line blocked, crushed or frozen. Occasionally a check valve stuck shut. A larger pump fixes none of those.

Do I need a bigger pump if mine cannot keep up?

Usually not. A failed check valve or a basin too small for the inflow both look like an undersized pump. Oversizing into a small pit causes short-cycling and destroys the switch.

How fast can someone come out?

Same day across most of St. Joseph County, and after hours when water is already coming in. Most parts-level repairs finish in the same visit.

The street got smart. The pit still needs checking.

Emergency repair, diagnostics, pit and valve testing, or a dry-weather inspection. Serving South Bend and all of St. Joseph County.
