Sump pump technician repairing a basement sump pit in Detroit, Michigan

About Sump Pump Repair Guys in Detroit

We repair sump pumps and nothing else. That means we know the difference between a pump that has failed and a sewer that has surcharged, and we will tell you which one you have before quoting anything.

Detroit runs largely on combined sewers, so heavy rain puts storm water and sewage into the same pipe. When that pipe fills, no pump in the world empties a basement faster than the sewer refills it. Knowing that distinction is most of a useful diagnosis here.

Our sump pump services in Detroit

  • 01

    Diagnostics

A manual lift test separates a switch fault from a motor fault in under a minute.

  • 02

    Float switch repair

The most common failure on any pump. Freed, replaced or reset to correct trip heights.

  • 03

    Check valve replacement

A failed valve drops the discharge column back into the pit seconds after shutoff.

  • 04

    Motor repair

Humming, tripping or failing bearings. We test under load before recommending replacement.

  • 05

    Impeller repair

Grinding usually means debris or grit-worn clearances. We open it and clear it.

  • 06

    Pit cleaning and repair

Silt and iron blocks intake screens. Undersized basins short-cycle every pump fitted.

  • 07

    Discharge line work

Blocked, crushed, frozen, or ending too close to the wall so water returns.

  • 08

    Backup system service

Battery load testing and changeover checks, because storms take the power out.

Why Detroit homeowners call us first

  • Diagnosis before replacement

Basements do not flood during business hours. Our lines stay open every night and weekend.

  • Priced before we start

A written number after diagnosis, approved by you before anything is touched.

Detroit basements, and what the city already found

On 25 and 26 June 2021 about six inches of rain fell on Detroit. It overwhelmed the regional and local sewer systems and led to a presidential disaster declaration. Everything the city has done since is a response to that night.

  • The finding

Nearly a third of laterals are failing

DWSD reports that when it assesses public sewers, nearly 30 percent of private lateral service lines are falling off the sewer main, badly cracked or otherwise damaged. That is the pipe between your house and the street, and it is yours.

  • The rule

A valve only goes in if the lateral is sound

Under the city programmes a backwater valve is installed only where the lateral is in viable condition. Fitting one onto a broken pipe does not protect a basement, so the camera comes before the valve.

  • The help

City programmes, at no cost to many owners

The Basement Backup Protection Program completed over 700 backwater valve installations before closing in 2023. The Private Sewer Repair Program that followed covers camera inspection, downspout disconnection, lateral repair and a valve, for eligible homes tied to the 2021 flood.

  • Our part

    What no programme covers

Neither scheme repairs the pump you already own, its switch, its valve or its pit. Check your eligibility first, then call us for whatever sits inside the basement.

Detroit sump pump questions, answered

My pump is fine but water still came up. Why?

On a combined sewer, heavy rain fills the same pipe that carries sewage. When it surcharges, water pushes back toward the lowest opening in your basement. That is a sewer problem, and a backwater valve rather than a bigger pump is the answer.

Should I get a camera inspection?

If backups repeat, yes. DWSD found nearly 30 percent of private laterals it encountered were failing. A camera turns a guess into a location and tells you whether a valve would even work.

Do I need a bigger pump if mine cannot keep up?

Usually not. A failed check valve, a blocked or frozen discharge line or a basin too small for the inflow all look like an undersized pump. Oversizing into a small pit causes short-cycling and destroys the switch.

Where should the discharge line end?

Away from the foundation, never into the sanitary or combined sewer. A line stopping a few feet from the wall soaks back to the footer drains, refills the pit, and wears the pump out years early.

How do I test the pump myself?

Pour several gallons into the basin slowly. The float should rise, the pump start, the water clear, and the pump stop on its own. Water flowing back after shutoff means the check valve is failing.

How fast can someone come out?

Same day across most of Detroit, and after hours when water is already coming in. Most parts-level repairs are finished in the same visit. Heavy rain is the exception, when calls spike citywide within the same hours.

Check the programme first. Then call us for the pump.

Emergency repair, diagnostics, pit and valve testing, or a dry-weather inspection. Serving Detroit and all of Wayne County.
