About Sump Pump Repair Guys in Appleton
We repair sump pumps and nothing else. No waterproofing upsell, no membership plan. You get a diagnosis, a written price, and a full-cycle test before we leave.
Most attention goes to the pump. State code has more to say about the pit it sits in and the vent above it, and those are the parts nobody inspects.
What code says about the pit itself
Wisconsin plumbing code sets specifics for storm and clearwater sumps that are easy to check and often wrong in older basements.
- Rim
One inch proud of the floor
An interior sump should have a rim at least an inch above the adjacent floor, so water crossing the slab cannot pour back in.
- Cover
Removable, and strong enough
The cover must come off for service and hold the loads expected on it. A loose board is neither, and lets debris reach the impeller.
- Vent
Solid covers need venting
A storm or clearwater sump with a solid cover must be vented, terminating at least an inch above the finished floor.
- Radon
One vent can do two jobs
A sealed sump can take a radon vent in place of a separate one, so a later retrofit need not reopen the concrete.
How a discharge line actually freezes
The city issues a winter reminder about this, because a frozen line means the basement floods with a pump that is working perfectly. It does not freeze all at once.
-
Pitch matters more than diameter
A line that drains completely between cycles has nothing left in it to freeze. A line that holds water is the one that closes up.
-
Where it ends decides the rest
An outlet buried in snow or sitting in a puddle will ice back into the pipe. Keeping the end clear is a two minute job.
-
Keep it out of sanitary plumbing
Wisconsin code and most local ordinances prohibit routing sump water into a sanitary lateral, including a floor drain or laundry sink.
-
Direct all three the same way
The city asks that gutters, downspouts and sump discharges are all directed properly, to prevent erosion, flooding and pollution.
What we repair
- 01
Float switch
The most common failure. If it runs when you lift the float by hand, this is it.
- 02
Check valve
Failed valves drop the discharge column back into the pit seconds after shutoff.
- 03
Impeller and motor
Grinding, humming or tripping. We test under load before recommending replacement.
- 04
Pit, rim and cover
Bringing the basin, its rim height and its cover back to something that meets code and keeps debris out.
- 05
Venting
Fitting the vent a solid covered sump requires, including where a radon vent can serve instead.
- 06
Frozen discharge lines
Thawed and cleared, then re-pitched and re-terminated so the same freeze does not repeat.

Appleton sump pump questions, answered
Should my sump pit have a raised rim?
Yes. An interior sump should have a rim extending at least an inch above the immediately adjacent floor, so water crossing the slab cannot run straight back into the pit you just emptied.
Does the pit need a vent?
If it has a solid cover, yes. It must be vented, terminating at least an inch above the finished floor. A sealed sump can use a radon vent instead of a separate one.
Is a plywood offcut an acceptable cover?
No. The cover has to be removable for service and strong enough for the loads expected on it. An improvised lid lets debris into the basin, a common cause of jammed floats and blocked intakes.
Why does my line freeze every winter?
Because water is left standing in it. Ice starts at the cold outlet end and grows back up the pipe until it is plugged, and then the pump runs against a solid block. Pitch and where the line ends decide whether that happens.
Can I run the discharge into a laundry sink for winter?
No. State code and local ordinances prohibit routing sump water into sanitary plumbing, including a floor drain or laundry sink. It also puts clean water into a pipe sized only for waste.
How fast can someone come out?
Same day across most of the Fox Valley, and after hours when water is already coming in. Most parts-level repairs finish in the same visit.
The pump is half the system. We check the other half.
