Sump pump technician repairing a basement sump pit in Eau Claire, Wisconsin

About Sump Pump Repair Guys in Eau Claire

We repair sump pumps and nothing else. No waterproofing upsell, no membership plan. You get a diagnosis, a written price, and a full-cycle test before we leave.

Two state code rules decide whether a storm sewer connection here is done properly. One is about height, the other about what you fit instead. Neither is obvious from inside the basement.

Enter high, or fit a valve

Where a subsoil drain connects to a storm sewer, code requires it to enter above the horizontal centre line, entirely above the top of the building sewer. If it cannot, a backwater valve has to be provided instead.

Correct storm sewer subsoil drain enters here above the centre line Or storm sewer backwater valve required entering below the centre line
The height decides whether the storm sewer can push back up your drain when it surcharges.
  • Height

Above the top of the building sewer

The subsoil drain has to sit entirely above it. That way a full storm sewer has to rise a long way before it can reach back into your line.

  • Or

A valve where height is impossible

On a flat site the geometry may not allow a high connection, and then the backwater valve is not optional. It is the code alternative.

  • Velocity

    Pipe size follows flow

Minimum discharge pipe diameter is based on the pump’s design flow rate and a minimum velocity of one foot per second. Oversized pipe lets solids settle.

  • Locate it

    Buried plastic needs tracer wire

Non-metallic storm pipe running to a municipal main needs a means of locating it, and the tracer wire insulation colour for storm is brown.

If you have a well, the pit has to keep its distance

Code requires sumps receiving clearwater, groundwater or stormwater to be separated from water wells by the distances set in the state’s well regulations. Across the Chippewa Valley plenty of properties still have one.

House pit Well separation distance set by state well rules discharge, aimed away from the well
The rule protects drinking water. It also means the obvious spot for a discharge is sometimes the wrong one.
  • Sandy ground drains fast, until it does not

Much of the valley sits on outwash sand and gravel, so water moves quickly. A pocket of clay under one house changes the picture completely.

  • Two rivers, one water table

With the Chippewa and the Eau Claire meeting here, river stage and groundwater rise together. A high river spring is a hard-working spring for your pump.

  • Ponding should clear in a day

Surface ponding is meant by design to drain within 24 hours of a storm. Water still standing after that is telling you something about the ground it sits on.

  • Never the sanitary sewer

State code prohibits routing sump water into a sanitary lateral, including a floor drain or laundry sink, whatever the weather is doing.

What we repair

  • 01

    Float switch

The most common failure. If it runs when you lift the float by hand, this is it.

  • 02

    Check valve

Failed valves drop the discharge column back into the pit seconds after shutoff.

  • 03

    Impeller and motor

Grinding, humming or tripping. We test under load before recommending replacement.

  • 04

    Pit and basin

Cracked, silted or undersized basins short-cycle every pump fitted into them.

  • 05

    Storm sewer connections

Checking the connection height, and fitting the backwater valve where the height cannot be achieved.

  • 06

    Frozen discharge lines

Thawed and cleared, then re-pitched so the same freeze does not repeat next winter.

Eau Claire sump pump questions, answered

Can my subsoil drain connect straight into the storm sewer?

Only if it enters above the horizontal centre line and sits entirely above the top of the building sewer. Where that height cannot be achieved, code requires a backwater valve instead.

Why does the connection height matter?

Because a storm sewer can surcharge in heavy rain. A high connection means the water level has to rise a long way before it can push back up your drain. A low one gives it a short trip.

I have a private well. Does that affect the pit?

Yes. Sumps receiving clearwater, groundwater or stormwater must be separated from water wells by the distances in the state well rules, and it is worth checking where the discharge lands as well as where the pit sits.

Is a bigger discharge pipe better?

No. Minimum pipe diameter is based on the pump’s design flow and a minimum velocity of one foot per second. Too large a pipe slows the water and lets material settle in it.

Water is still standing two days after rain.

Surface ponding is meant by design to drain within 24 hours. Longer than that points at compacted or clay ground, and that water is the same water your footing drains are collecting.

How fast can someone come out?

Same day across most of Eau Claire County, and after hours when water is already coming in. Most parts-level repairs finish in the same visit.
