Green Bay has a real claim process for sewer backups, with a real deadline attached. What you write down in the first hour decides how that goes.

Write these five things down

The city asks for a list of discarded items and, where possible, before and after photographs. Claims are reviewed individually by a committee, and the city has 120 days to allow or disallow yours.

Date of backup Time water started Time water stopped Items damaged Estimated cost Before and after photos 120 days for the city to allow or disallow the claim
Filing a claim against the city means complying with section 893.80 of the Wisconsin Statutes, so the paperwork matters.
  • Report it

    Call the city either way

Once notified, the city investigates the condition of its main sewer lines. Even when the fault turns out to be private, that check rules the main out.

  • Usually private

Most backups start in the lateral

The city says many are caused by roots, deterioration or blockages in the property owner’s lateral, which is the owner’s responsibility.

  • Never

    Do not plug the drains

The city warns against trying to stop the flow through any drain. An added obstruction can cause serious damage to your household drainage system.

  • Brittle

    Old laterals fail suddenly

Older lateral pipe can be fragile and brittle, failing and then catching debris or letting groundwater in. A camera finds that before it becomes a claim.

The one thing people do that makes it worse

During a backup it is tempting to bail the water into the sump pit, because the pit is right there and it empties itself. The city warns against it, and the reason is the route that water then takes.

sump pit sewer water bailed in discharge line Local waterways untreated, straight there The pit is not a drain. It is a shortcut to the bay.
The sump is designed for clear groundwater and discharges outside, which is exactly why sewage must never go into it.
  • Clear water connections are illegal

French drains, foundation drains, gutter downspouts and sump pumps must not be connected to the sanitary sewer. If they are, debris and silt clog the line as well.

  • The sanitary pipe is sized for waste only

It was never built to carry storm water or clear water. Storm and clear water have to drain to storm sewers, which is why the rule exists at all.

  • Watch what gets flushed

Wipes, nappies, rags, towels and paper products other than toilet paper are named causes of backups. What passes your house can stop at your neighbour’s.

  • Keep the traps and vents right

For odour, check that unused floor drains, sinks and toilets still hold water in the trap, and that roof vents are clear of nests, leaves, snow and ice.

What we repair

  • 01

    Float switch

The most common failure. If it runs when you lift the float by hand, this is it.

  • 02

    Check valve

Failed valves drop the discharge column back into the pit seconds after shutoff.

  • 03

    Impeller and motor

Grinding, humming or tripping. We test under load before recommending replacement.

  • 04

    Pit and basin

Cracked, silted or undersized basins short-cycle every pump fitted into them.

  • 05

    Frozen discharge lines

Thawed and cleared, then re-pitched so the same freeze does not repeat next winter.

  • 06

    Post-backup pit cleaning

Cleaning and checking a pit that has had contaminated water in it, rather than leaving it to the next storm.

Green Bay sump pump questions, answered

Can I claim against the city?

You can file one, and it must comply with section 893.80 of the Wisconsin Statutes. Each claim is reviewed individually by the Claims Committee, and the city has 120 days from submission to allow or disallow it.

What should I record?

The date of the backup, the time water started and stopped, the items damaged and the estimated cost of what you discard. Before and after photographs help. Gather it while the basement still looks the way it did.

Can I bail the water into my sump pit?

No. The city warns against it because the pit discharges outside, so sewer water put in there goes untreated straight to local waterways. The sump is for clear groundwater only.

Should I block the floor drain to stop it?

No. Do not try to stop the flow through any drain. An added obstruction can cause serious damage to your household drainage system, which is a bigger repair than the clean-up.

Whose fault is it usually?

Most often the private lateral, through roots, deterioration or blockages, and that is the owner’s responsibility. Report it anyway so the city can check the main and rule that out.

How fast can someone come out?

Same day across most of Brown County, and after hours when water is already coming in. Most parts-level repairs finish in the same visit.

Record it first. Then get the pump working.

Emergency repair, diagnostics, pit and valve testing, or a dry-weather inspection. Serving Green Bay and all of Brown County.
